Therefore all seasons shall be sweet to thee,
Whether summer clothe the general earth
With greeness, or the redbreast sit and sing
Betwixt the tufts of snow on the bare branch
Of mossy apple-tree, while the nigh thatch
Smokes in the sun-thaw; whether the eave-drops fall
Heard only in the trances of the blast,
Or if the secret ministry of frost
Shall hang them up in silent icicles,
Quietly shining to the quiet Moon.

One Hundred Years Ago

Today would have been my mum's 100th birthday, she was born on 27th August 1910. I have no photos of her as a little girl and very few of her as a young woman. This was taken when she was in her early 40s.

This is my favourite photo of my mum and I'm using it here even though it is damaged - I wonder if you can guess who tore it? :) The little girl is me of course.
My mum was just as nice as she looks in these photographs, she gave me a wonderful childhood and I miss her still. Happy Birthday Mum!

And a happy birthday to her from me too - don't you look alike! I too have few photos of my mum; I wonder though, if that makes them even more precious and treasured than the thousands of digital images today's generation will have?

In the second photo she reminds me of Catherine Hepbur...she was very lovely.

What lovely photographs - and memories. OH's mum was born in 1909. That seems so long ago now.

You definitely resemble your Mom, i loved the photos and sympathize with your lack of early photos, i recently got one of my Mom as a little girl and it brought tears to my eyes. Mine was born in 1922 and has been gone 17 years now, but in my heart she'll always be there.

You've lost your dear mum, and that's a very hard thing, but you've gained a very special guardian angel to watch over you and those you love. If you think about it, half your genes are hers, so in a real, true way, she is always with you.

Rowan,
I'm sure your mum had a great influence on the wonderful person you became.
I just finished reading "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" and thought of you continually while reading it.

Your head has the same lovely tilt as your mother's, Rowan. What wonderful pictures. What is it about the old black & whites that make the subject so very real. My own mother would have been 97 today. She's been gone 12 years longer than I ever knew her.

Like the others who have left comments, I'm pleased that you shared this anniversary and the photos of your Mom.
The past week was one of quiet remembrance for me: my dear Grampa Mac was born 124 years ago on Aug. 22; My Mother passed away 3 years ago Aug. 23; My Dad died one year ago on 24th Aug.
We go on missing our loved ones, thinking of them as they were in their prime of health and activity.
It is astonishing to realize that I knew someone born over 100 years ago.

Catching up at last - have missed you. A crazy Summer since Africa - still running in circles even now!!

Just had to say how lovely this post is - your mum was a beauty and I can see you in her! Mine was born in 1911, died at age 91 - women were true ladies in their era weren't they? I loved my mum so much, she was such a good woman and mother despite the hardships of life, especially through the war years etc.

Thanks for sharing Rowan.
